  1. Prep the pans and oven: Preheat oven to 350°F (177°C). Grease the cake pans and line with parchment paper.
  2. Mix dry ingredients in a bowl: whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Beat butter, oil, and sugar on high speed until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
  4. Beat in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla extract. Scrape the bowl to ensure even mixing.
  5. Combine wet and dry ingredients: On low speed, alternately add dry ingredients and buttermilk in portions, starting and ending with dry ingredients. Mix until just combined; do not overmix.
  6. Bake the cake! Divide batter evenly between pans. Bake for 35–40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool in pans for 10–15 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. Frosting: Once cooled, spread frosting between layers and over the top and sides. For a smooth finish, use a spatula or offset knife.
